Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
NHS charges
On 1 April 2010 the Scottish Government reduced prescription charges to £3.00, leading towards a total abolition of charges in 2011. However, if you already receive free prescriptions, you will not be affected by these changes.
Prescription Pre-payment Certificate (PPC) and Single Prescription Item prices

Please consider the above timetable for charge reductions before applying for, or renewing, a PPC at your Community Pharmacy or from Practitioner Services, and ensure that you tender the correct amount for your certificate.
