Insch War Memorial Hospital

Insch War Memorial Hospital was built in 1922 from public subscriptions and was dedicated to those who gave their lives in the First World War from 1914 to 1918. The war memorial itself is located within the hospital and a short service of Remembrance is held in the hospital every year.
The hospital has 13 beds and the medical and nursing staff are able to treat patients with a variety of conditions who may have a range of needs, and who may require either rehabilitation after illness or an operation, palliative care, acute GP treatment or general health assessment. A number of specialist Consultants from Aberdeen also visit on a regular basis.
The Oakland Suite was opened in 2004, a palliative care suite with toilet/shower facilities and accompanying quiet room, for relatives to use and to stay overnight if required.
There is also a Day Hospital which is currently held 3 days a week. This service provides medical assessment and treatments to patients who do not require to be admitted to hospital and is presently undergoing a re-design to ensure it is fully able to meet the future needs of the local population. Clients attending the day hospital have access to a GP as well as other professionals such as a District Nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist etc whilst also having the opportunity for social contact and support from others who may be in a similar situation.
Various health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia, fall assessment and continence can be checked and monitored, and blood and urine tests taken along with treatments such as injections and dressing changes. Transport can be arranged for clients who have difficulty accessing the service, if they are patients of the Health Centre.
The hospital nurses also staff and run a 24 hr/7 day Minor Injury Unit which is well used for local accident & emergencies. Medical support for emergencies during surgery opening times is provided by the health centre GPs, and out of hours i.e in the evenings and at weekends, by NHS 24. Other clinical support is accessed by telephone or via a Telemedicine link with staff in the Accident & Emergency department of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The attached Health Centre is also the base for the local Bennachie Community Care Team including the District Nurses and Health Visitors, which allows staff in both the hospital and the Health Centre to work closely together to ensure that both pre and post hospital patient admission are well linked and organised.

The aim of physiotherapy and occupational therapy is to improve the quality of life of those with a disability, injury or illness in order to help them to achieve maximum independence with all the activities of daily living.
Occupational therapists and physiotherapists carry out an assessment of a patient and a course of treatment is planned. They are involved in the decision about when a patient is safe to go home from hospital and what level of care and assistance and further treatment they will require once they are home. They can assess a patient’s home and discuss solutions to any identified problems, including organising any suitable equipment and even arrange to adapt spaces in the home e.g positioning of handrails, or advice on re-housing if necessary. Community occupational therapists and physiotherapists work closely with all the other members of the health team.
